How a New Roadshow Series Is Trying to Bring Live Music Back to the Forefront

Road to 60 and Five Revives Barbados Live Music

As Barbados counts down to its Diamond Jubilee/Independence celebrations, a new series called “Road to 60 and Five” is aiming to breathe fresh life into the local live music scene. Artist and promoter Omar “Marzville” McQuilkin is partnering with reggae band Rite Side of Red to host nine weekly concerts in communities across the island.

The initiative responds to a long‑standing concern: there aren’t enough regular, paid live gigs, and audiences have grown more accustomed to consuming music through phones and playlists than showing up to shows. By taking performances directly into neighbourhoods, the roadshows hope to:

• Rebuild the habit of going out for live music.

• Give local artistes consistent stage time and income.

• Connect Independence‑themed programming with everyday fans, not just fête‑goers.

For content creators, this is a rich storytelling lane:

• Behind‑the‑scenes reels of soundcheck, travel between venues, and crowd reactions.

• Short interviews with artistes on what “live” means to them now vs 10–20 years ago.

• Community‑focused angles: which parishes are getting shows, how local vendors and small businesses benefit, and what genres are drawing the biggest crowds.

If the series succeeds, it could shift how promoters think about touring locally, not just regionally. Instead of betting everything on one big event, a string of smaller, well‑marketed shows could create a more sustainable live ecosystem—and more consistent content for your pages.
